Agriculture, Breakout Star of French Cinema
French people’s attachment to agriculture and rural life has regularly been reflected in the dissemination of an idealised image through the “Seventh Art”. This image is somewhat both caricatural and sometimes burlesque or pessimistic. This is a historical legacy since these themes are relatively of secondary importance in French cinema. Nevertheless, the past twenty years have coincided with a wave of new film productions which are much closer to agrarian realities and current societal debates revolving around agriculture. Between comedy and drama, this new wave could be the beginning of the affirmation of a new film genre: rural film.
