The Institutional Management of Autism in Canton : Competitive Reappropriations
In China – where the ABA method has a large following and a semi-monopol on treatment techniques – private schools for children arbitrarily diagnosed as autistic, have incrised in number. Anthropologist Selim focused her study on parents who had recently moved to the southern capital, Canton, and frequent these specialized schools. The author analyzes the paths taken by the men and women who are desperately trying to treat their child in a context dominated by market norms and a communist state.
