Clinical Study of Fieldwork about Immigration
Anne Yvonne Guillou discusses with Monique Selim the conditions of production of anthropological knowledge with reference to research she conducted as a consultant anthropologist about a Muslim population in a French region. The fieldwork proved to be very difficult to carry out. She reviews the set of factors that influenced the production of the data right up until the final research report : the « ideological straitjacket » in which one of the municipalities that co-financed the study was locked ; the characteristics of the local market of the social sciences, structured by political relationships ; the hostility of the « ethnic brokers » ; the wariness of the population studied, concerned about its public image ; but also the fact of conducting the research as one of a pair of two women anthropologists reflecting on their own place
