From One Inheritance (Cultural) to Another (Genetic): Transformations of the Subject and Objects of Medical Anthropology
Health has emerged as a central positive norm in numerous societies. Western, allopathic, « modern » medicine has established itself almost everywhere and anthropology no longer has as its only field of inquiry the domain of « traditions » reified by a culturalist perspective. Three over-lapping stages can be identified which mark out the development of medical anthropology from 1970 to the present. First I examine the micro-social and cultural management of illness. I then analyse collective and state management which installs public health at a national level and with a view to prevention. Finally, the utopia of perfect health formulates a single model of global management aiming at prediction which develops in the twenty‑first century. These stages mark changes in the scale of management, differences in the nature of medicine and different human subjects.
