Cet article explore le sens du mot « ethnos » dans le contexte des Etats post‑soviétiques, resitués dans la toile complexe des enjeux des recompositions identitaires qui se font jour à la fois dans leur espace et dans le contexte européen et global en général. L’espace post‑soviétique est ainsi appréhendé non pas tant en soi que dans ses interactions anciennes et nouvelles avec les pays d’Europe occidentale, ce qui permet de relier le phénomène de recomposition identitaire ethnique et national qui s’y déroule à celui du reste de l’Europe, en particulier. L’URSS a utilisé le concept d’ethnos en l’intégrant dans le contexte politique et idéologique qui était le sien, lui faisant jouer le même rôle ambivalent qu’il a généralement de codification hiérarchisée des groupes, d’indigénisation du social. L’analyse insiste sur l’importance du mode de catégorisation qui procède à son application, déterminant son caractère démocratique ou non et son usage social adapté à la reconfiguration des groupes sociaux dans des sociétés hétérogènes en pleine mutation. Les spécificités du contexte soviétique du point de vue identitaire semblent ainsi se dissoudre peu à peu à la faveur de la globalisation pour rejoindre celles du contexte européen et plus largement occidental.

The Uses of Ethnos, Specificities of the Russo-Soviet and Post-Soviet Context
This article explores the meaning of the word « ethnos » in the context of the post‑Soviet states, re‑situated in the complex field of conflicts over the reconstruction of identities which are emerging both in this region and in Europe and the world in general. The post‑Soviet world is thus considered less in its own terms than in terms of previous and new forms of its interaction with the countries of Western Europe. This allows the phenomenon of the reconstruction of ethnic and national identities taking place there to be connected with that occurring in the rest of Europe in particular. In the USSR, the use of the concept of ethnos was bound up with the political and ideological context, and it was made to play the same ambivalent role as it generally has elsewhere of the hierarchical classification of groups, the « nativisation » (indigénisation) of social issues. The analysis insists on the importance of the mode of categorisation which effects its application, determining whether or not it has a democratic character as well as its social use adapted to the reconfiguration of social groups in rapidly changing heterogeneous societies. The specificities of the Soviet context as far as identity issues are concerned seem thus to have gradually dissolved owing to globalisation and to have become akin to those of the European and broader Western context.
